Miguel Vallejo, Dave Madole and I formed Left Out Lamont and we went on a
tear over four years. I learned a great deal about music, life, people and places while in this band. I think we must have
had at least forty songs!
I only broke three or four strings over the
course of performing - one string broke while I was playing at the Stork Club in Oakland. After I broke the string, I finished the song, ran in the back in the kitchen to get
my old fender bass and I was back out on stage in under 30 seconds.
During the recording of our
CD, Come And Get Us, at one of the overdub sessions, Dave the drummer was out of town, and there was
something wrong with his cowbell on a track. Someone suggested that I overdub it, so here it is, my debut
as a percussionist (ha!):
Not.Mp3. It's about halfway through the song, and very obvious.
I had a part in writing both of the tracks
listed below, an mp3 version of Lily street is
here.
The song listed below,
Iguana was originally started back when Miguel and I were in
Random Eye, and just prior to
the band breaking up in October of 1997, we started toying with the idea one night.
The guitarist had an iguana he was trying to
get rid of. Somebody started playing this riff, and I started singing, "do you wanna, do you wanna, do you wanna iguana".
Random Eye played it as a jam at the last show, but it came back as a completed song with Left Out Lamont.
Fans at shows would think we were saying "Tijuana Iguana", and maybe
that's where he is now. Unfortunately, when the iguana was given away,
it passed away because the person didn't know how to take care of it. But he's immortalized in song.
Overall, my experience in Left Out Lamont was great.
I met alot of really cool people, and went to places I may not have gone like Fresno, Yuba City, Merced, Sonoma State,
Eastpark Reservoir in Maxwell county, Portland, OR, San Diego, Chico, Hollywood, Pomona,
and of course the small town of Lamont, just south of Bakersfield (well, we never actully went there).
Breaking down in the San Bernadino mountains, actually getting stuck in Lodi
(see John Fogerty and Creedence Clearwater Revival, April 1969) after a day time festival benefiting a skatepark in Stockton.
Later that night at another gig in Sacramento, someone dropped my 85 lb. bass cabinet on my foot.
I was barely able to play the show.
